Rob Richardson, Chamber of Lawrence, EDC representative to Panasonic. He will be providing an update to the Panasonic project, how it will affect Lawrence/Douglas County.

Cindy Villarreal, Kansas Department of Corrections, is an Offender Workforce Development and Employment Retention Specialist, with over 25 years’ experience in the field. As part of the KDOC Reentry team, she prepares justice-involved individuals to become productive and valued employees and responsible citizens, and this is her passion. Her philosophy is that to achieve success, it is critical to use a holistic approach addressing multiple needs concurrently and has developed partnerships with organizations and agencies statewide to cultivate vital resources.

She first started her Workforce Development career in the non-profit sector, working with current or formerly incarcerated individuals in both group settings and individual meetings, finally transitioning fully to the Kansas Department of Corrections in 2013.

Cindy has presented at many levels, including local, state, regional, and national conferences on Second Chance/Fair Chance Employment, and recently co-created the updated curriculum for the Job Readiness program used statewide in the Department of Corrections, as well as developing staff training on employment preparation for those preparing for release.

    1. Understand the value of Fair Chance Hiring to obtain a motivated and skilled workforce in an often-overlooked population.

    2. Recognize the value of a partnership with KDOC—learn what KDOC is doing to prepare justice-involved individuals for the workplace, including education and programs, vocational training, on-the-job training, partnerships with community organizations, supports, and incentives.

    3. Participate in a Q&A session regarding successful Fair Chance employment.
